Home Affairs Minister, Doctor Leon Schreiber.
Home Affairs Minister, Dr Leon Schreiber, says the only way to end illegal immigration to South Africa is to ensure that the Border Management Authority (BMA) is adequately funded.
He’s announced that the Border Management Authority intercepted more than 25 000 people attempting to enter the country during the festive season.
Addressing the media in Pretoria, Schreiber said urgent funding was needed to strengthen the BMA.
“The task of building a modern, efficient and secure border management system remains ongoing. Continued investment in personnel infrastructure and technology will be essential if the BMA is to fully realise its mandate. Critically, the chronic underfunding of the BMA must be addressed as this organisation has conclusively demonstrated the necessary commitment to address longstanding challenges in this area.”
“Additionally, any investment in the BMA ultimately pays for itself by reducing the impact of illicit trade and illegal immigration and enhancing revenue collection.”
