The Kruger National Park is counting the cost after devastating floods caused widespread damage across parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
The floods have claimed nearly 40 lives and left billions of rands in damage, prompting urgent calls for both national and international assistance.
In response, the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Willie Aucamp has announced the establishment of the Kruger Recovery Fund aimed at restoring critical infrastructure and protecting wildlife.
SANParks spokesperson Reynold Thakhuli has explained the importance of the new fund.
“The damage is extensive, it’s significant, it’s huge, particularly in the northern part of the-of the park. Roads have been swept away, fences have been swept away, staff living quarters was underwater including one rest camp which is called Letaba Rest Camp. So the damage is really, really extensive at the moment. The recovery fund is really you know-it’s fixed to assist in terms of getting things back to normal as quickly as possible.”
