Testimony before Ad Hoc undermines confidence in law enforcement: Ramaphosa

African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa says the testimony presented before parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee and Madlanga Commission of Inquiry investigating corruption within the criminal justice system undermines the country’s confidence in law enforcement.

Ramaphosa opened the three-day ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) Lekgotla in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.

He received the Madlanga Commission interim report in December.

He says he’ll use the recommendations to root out corruption.

“In 2026, this needs to change. South Africans need to see action being taken to prevent crime and to bring those responsible to book. We must use the findings and the recommendations of the Madlanga Commission and the Ad Hoc Committee to decisively tackle areas where there is rot in our criminal justice system,” says Ramaphosa.

Moreover, Ramaphosa has acknowledged that violence and crime are major challenges in the country.

Hundreds of Sporong residents in Randfontein West of Johannesburg, have been displaced after fleeing illegal miners’ alleged violence and intimidation.

Meanwhile, two people were killed and three others wounded outside Booysens Magistrate’s Court this week. These recent violent incidents have raised safety challenges that South Africans continue to face.

Ramaphosa says he’s spoken to the Commissioner of Police to intensify their response efforts.

“I had a discussion with the Commissioner of Police, and we’ve reflected on all these killings and all these acts of criminality. And I stressed to them that they must now re-double their efforts in as many ways as possible. If they have to set up specialised teams that have greater expertise, they must do so. In fact, that’s what I expect of them. The seriousness of the challenges we face is really prominent in their minds,” adds Ramaphosa.
