Parliamentary Committee backs total alcohol ban for drivers

The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport has backed the Transport Department’s demand to outlaw the use of alcohol by drivers before they get behind the wheel.

Last week, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy announced that her department would amend the National Road Traffic Act to prohibit any alcohol consumption for drivers.

Parliament’s Transport Portfolio Committee Chairperson Donald Selamolela says, “We support the call by the ministry and the executive of the Republic that perhaps it’s time that we introduce a law to ban alcohol for those who are driving. And we find it to be a compelling case that there is no justification for why someone must drink when he knows that he’s going to drive. So, we will be backing that particular proposal and we are waiting for the executive to submit before us so that we can initiate the process of starting law formulation in that regard.”
