Limpopo flood-related deaths now at 19

Flood-related deaths in Limpopo have risen to 19 following the discovery of a body in Phalaborwa.

The body is believed to be of one of the two boys who were swept away in the overflowing Selati River.

Limpopo Disaster Management spokesperson Tsakani Baloyi says communities should continue exercising caution near rivers and dams.

She says search operations for the remaining missing people continue in different parts of the province.

Meanwhile, the Mthimkhulu royal council in Giyani says has called on government to build houses for the flood victims.

Victims of floods in the area have been provided with shelter at a church and with food parcels.

Thirty-five houses were flattened and more than 80 people were rendered homeless due to floods.

A member of the royal council, Daniel Mabunda, was speaking during the SASSA’s CEO Themba Matlou’s visit to the flood stricken Mbaula village outside Giyani

Mabunda says they’re grateful of the assistance received so far.

“People are getting assisted. There are people who assisting with food parcels, blankets and clothes. People don’t have homes. It will assist a lot if they build them houses.”
