KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi
Former Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) head Robert McBride has accused the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi of attempting to interfere with the entity’s investigations on multiple occasions.
McBride says the investigations involved some senior SAPS officials, including the former Acting Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane, whom he alleges Mkhwanazi has close ties with.
McBride is currently testifying before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee in Cape Town, which is examining national security concerns.
“From my time at IPID, I’m aware of an incident. It should be incidents, there are a few of them, where General Mkhwanazi played an undue and prosecutable role in trying to disrupt and scuffle IPID’s investigation into General Phahlane with Brigadier Tlhohokhomo of Crime Intelligence and others,” says McBribe.
Meanwhile, earlier, tempers flared at the Committee after McBride refused to disclose his current employment, citing legal restrictions.
His utterances angered several Members of Parliament (MPs).
McBride had earlier submitted what he described as an outdated CV, saying he could not locate his most recent one.
