Deputy Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Andries Nel says security measures around courts will need to be urgently reviewed following the deadly shooting outside the Booysens Magistrates’ Court in Johannesburg.
Two people were fatally shot, and three others wounded, when gunmen opened fire on a group that was attending court earlier today.
Nel has raised serious concerns about safety at judicial facilities.
He says discussions with police management are underway to strengthen visible policing around courts.
“The fact that this incident took place outside and in close proximity to the operations of the court would need to reassess and strengthen visible policing and other security measures outside of the court. We have already raised that with the station commander. It is also a conversation we are having with the Minister of Police to strengthen policing,” he says.
