Eleven learners have been killed while on the way to school in a private scholar transport in the Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng.
The department of education says five other learners who sustained injuries have been rushed to hospital.

Departmental spokesperson Steve Mabona explains, “Accordingly, about 11 learners passed on at the tragic scene. We understand that there’s about 5 learners that are en route to different medical facilities. The scene is active, as we are informed. Emergency services are attending to those that they are involved in this said accident. We just wish to convey our condolences to the Affected families, school communities, as well.”
The province’s MEC for Education Matome Chiloane is en route to the scene.
The department says the scene remains active and emergency services are still attending to the scene.
