Meyiwa trial resumes with focus on alleged police assault witnesses

The High Court in Pretoria is expected to hear if the police officers who were present when Sifiso “Gwabini” Zungu alleges he was assaulted will take the stand as the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial resumes Monday morning.

Five men are on trial for the 2014 murder of the Bafana Bafana captain.

Gwabini who is the third defence witness, is said to have hosted a gathering at a hostel in Vosloorus,  East of Johannesburg , where all the accused were allegedly spotted the day the soccer captain was murdered in 2014.

The state was in the middle of Gwabini’s cross-examination when the defence objected to questions around the witness statement as Gwabini was allegedly assaulted by the police and forced to sign.

Presiding Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng said he viewed the assault allegations as serious – and advised that the officers who were present when Gwabini was questioned should come to court to explain what transpired.

“If I don’t call these witnesses who allegedly beat up Mr Gwabini at the cemetery and gold spot. I will be failing in my duty. It is essential for the just decision of the case. Even after the counsels have closed the case, even after they have argued, the court can still call the witness. At any stage. So the cross examination of Mr Gwabini can continue thereafter. Because he is made a set or testify to evidence which the court wants to hear, from persons who are accused of saying or doing things.”
