DA accused of double standards as it battles infighting

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has been accused of double standards as it is grappling with infighting between senior national leaders, months before its elective congress.

Former Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Dion George resigned from the DA and Parliament, following a bitter public fallout with party leader John Steenhuisen.

George, who was also the DA’s federal finance chair, publicly revealed Steenhuisen’s money issues. He also accused the party leader of being captured by the ANC in the GNU.

However, Steenhuisen has now been cleared of misappropriating party funds.

ActionSA National Chairperson, Michael Beaumont, who is also a former DA member, says, “It certainly does appear to be a mess. The Democratic Alliance entered into the GNU without any idea of what reforms the ANC was going to be required to commit and it’s just become ANC-light. In that process, that is precisely why ActionSA refused to enter the GNU, because there’s been no agreement on what was going to change in our country as a virtue of this union. From that point of view, it looks like leaders of that party (DA) have been captured.”
