St Albans Correctional Facility in Gqeberha
A surprise raid at St Albans Correctional Facility in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape on Sunday night has revealed several procedural irregularities within the facility’s management.
The raid, led by Correctional Services Commissioner, Makgothi Thobakgale, uncovered various contrabands in prison cells, including cellphones, cash and inmate medical records.

Commissioner Thobakgale says what was more concerning than the contraband was the failure by officials to follow basic operational procedures meant to prevent the breaches.
“These are standard operating procedures that our officials and officers are supposed to adhere to; there are standards that is why when one finds this type of transgression taking place one gets very upset. We will find out which officials are involved in this, and we will charge them.”
