Humansdorp childminder to appear in court on neglect, assault charges

A childminder is expected to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court in the Eastern Cape on Monday.

This after a two-year-old toddler was found wounded in Jeffreys Bay on New Year’s Day.

Police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana says officers responded to a complaint of an incident in the Tokyo Sexwale township, where they found the child with wounds to the upper body.

The child was taken to the hospital.

Gantana says the childminder was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time.

“A 59-year-old suspect is due to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges of child neglect and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.”

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Thandiswa Kupiso says, “It was disturbing and shocking, where priority was given to entertainment and liquor over the safety of a helpless child.”
