The City of Cape Town Traffic Services says it has issued fines to 250 pedestrians found unlawfully walking on the city’s motorways since the start of this month.
The flouting of traffic laws happened despite the city’s extensive pedestrian awareness and education initiatives.
Spokesperson Kevin Jacobs says their direct engagements with pedestrians prior to the festive season were aimed at prevention, understanding and voluntary compliance.
“Despite these efforts, pedestrians continue to place themselves at risk by entering motorways, which are designed exclusively for motor vehicles travelling at speed. Pedestrian presence on these routes creates a serious safety hazard, not only to the individuals involved but also to motorists who may be forced into sudden evasive action.”
Jacobs adds: “Traffic Services will maintain visible patrols and targeted operations on major routes throughout the festive season. Motorists are urged to remain vigilant, while pedestrians are reminded to make use of pedestrian bridges, crossings and designated walkways.”
