DA renews calls for criminal charges in Tembisa Hospital scandal

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has renewed its call for criminal charges to be laid against those implicated in the Tembisa Hospital looting scandal.

More than R2 billion was embezzled from the hospital, allegedly by three syndicates identified by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

The SIU has since seized the assets of one of the identified syndicates.

The DA’s Gauteng Shadow Health MEC, Jack Bloom insists that the seized assets should be auctioned off and funds accumulated be returned to the hospital.

“Hospital corruption, it all happened three years ago, and we’ve got a massive amount of evidence about what happened there and enough to lay charges. We’ve had other very long running corruption in the health department that we also haven’t seen criminal charges. Something’s very wrong with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), and we’ve seen this in various investigations that have come forth about just how, frankly, corrupted the NPA has become. As a society, we’re not going to progress unless we cut out this cancer of corruption. And there need to be accountability people need to see that the masterminds are sent to jail,” adds Bloom.
