GP faces backlog of 5,000 unplaced learners for 2026

Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane says more than 5000 learners are still awaiting placement for the 2026 academic year.

Chiloane says that as of Monday the department’s online admissions system recorded a total of 1478 grade 1 learners who remain unplaced as well as 3986 grade 8 learners. He did however, say that the department will continue to release placement and transfer offers daily through the online admissions system.

Gauteng Education Department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona says this figure is largely due to parents refusing to have their children placed at alternative schools.

“The challenge that we have is preference, schools that parents will prefer to take their children and when you give them an alternative they say no I didn’t apply to that school, this is the school that I want to take my child to. So we then need to negotiate with them and try to get another one because the high pressure schools would have received a lot of applications and it’s impossible to accommodate everyone. So that’s why we then opt for alternative schools,” adds Mabona.
