Over 227 motorists arrested by JMPD for alleged drunk driving

Johannesburg Metro Police’s Chief Patrick Jaca says they’re seeing very high numbers of accidents on the roads and more people have been killed.

Jaca’s utterances follow the arrests of 227 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol over the past weekend.

JMPD’s spokesperson Xolani Fihla says they’ll continue with their festive season safety campaign and operations and officers will remain deployed 24 hours, 7 days a week across major routes and hotspots.

“The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department remains steadfast in our commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users within the City of Johannesburg. As the holiday season reaches its peak, our officers have intensified law enforcement operations to curb the scourge of driving under the influence of alcohol. Between the 15th and 21st of December 2025, JMPD officers conducted a series of high-visibility roadblocks, roving patrols, and targeted operations across all regions of the city. As a result of these operations, a total of 227 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.”
