Johannesburg’s hijacked-buildings
Some occupants of a hijacked building in the Johannesburg CBD say staying there is their only option. Most of them are destitute and jobless.
This emerged during a multidisciplinary sting operation at the building over the weekend.
Mayoral Committee Member for Public Safety, Mgcini Tshwaku, says a turf war over hijacked buildings in the CBD is escalating again.
The operation followed the killing of renowned DJ Warrick Stock, better known as “DJ Warras”, earlier this month.
He was shot multiple times next to a building his private security company was contracted to.
A man who sells mattresses was reprimanded for keeping his daughter in one of the shacks erected inside the hijacked building in Marshalltown. He says he has no choice but to share the space with his school-going daughter.
“I don’t have anyone that I know. So, it’s a big risk to just give anyone my daughter. It’s a big risk. She’s closed school. And she only came here last week Friday.”

Tshwaku says the turf war over hijacked building rentals in the inner city is escalating again, putting many lives at risk. He led an operation to tackle the crisis and stop the bloodshed that’s related to the ongoing hijacking of buildings.
Property hijacking syndicates have seized over 500 buildings in the Johannesburg CBD.
Tshwaku says that the property owner approached the City for help after he received several assassination threats.
“Into the death of DJ Warras. We thought, ‘Let us elevate it even more.’ Because this is a turf war of hijacked buildings to operate in these buildings. Many people were actually killed. Three groups have been killed, and now the fourth group is the one that’s been.”
