Bekkersdal tavern owner fears for her life following deadly shooting

The owner of the kwaNoxolo tavern in Bekkersdal on Gauteng’s West Rand, says she fears for her life following the deadly mass shooting at her tavern in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Nine people were shot and killed, and at least 1 others wounded when a group of armed suspects opened fire on patrons.

Police say 10 suspects arrived at the tavern in a white Toyota Quantum and a silver sedan before shooting randomly inside the premises and continuing to fire as they fled the scene.

Police investigations are continuing, and no arrests have been made yet.

Tavern owner Nanesi Matwa says the incident has left her traumatised saying she is struggling to sleep at night.

“I’m struggling to sleep because I’m scared. I barely slept last night, and my heart feels heavy. I don’t think I’ll be able to continue operating this tavern. It feels overwhelming. Facing the families will be difficult, because I know some of them personally. I understand that this isn’t my fault, but that doesn’t make it any easier. I’m scared for my life, and I’m seriously considering leaving this place,” says Matwa.
