Police say nine people have been killed in a major shooting incident in Bekkersdal township in the west of Johannesburg.
Ten others were wounded in the incident, which happened at KwaNoxolo tavern in the Tambo section overnight.
Police initially said that ten people had died in the shooting.
Reports say unknown gunmen randomly opened fire at patrons and people outside the tavern.
The wounded have been taken to nearby hospitals and are receiving medical attention.
Police are still at the scene of the shooting, investigating the cause of the incident.
Gauteng Acting Police Commissioner Fred Kekana says, “We are still busy obtaining statements. Our national crime and management team has arrived. The provincial crime scene management team has arrived and a team from the local criminal record centre is here, so is our serious crime investigating team, crime intelligence and the provincial crime detective team is on scene.”
