The metro’s director of Parks and Recreation, Simphiwe Ndlovu, says the closure was linked to debris from the uMngeni River.

“Just to indicate that those four were linked to the Umgeni River catchment system, which was the main cause of why we had to take the precautionary measures to close those four beaches. But we are very happy because we’ve got only one Laguna beach. We are busy testing as we speak, we are busy testing and looking at other factors that may be still affecting the Laguna one,” adds Ndlovu.

Meanwhile beachgoers on Durban’s North Beach have been enjoying another hot, sunny day on the beach.

A man from Mpumalanga, who’s on holiday with his family, says he’s happy that the beaches are open so that they can cool down in the ocean, “It’s nice, it’s safe at least. The lifeguards are here. I’m hoping that everything stays like this. I saw people and I was like okay, at least they haven’t closed so I’m happy that they didn’t close it because it would be sad actually.”
