The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) says it will be targeting key taxi ranks and routes to ensure taxi drivers have the necessary documentation.
This is part of its Hlokomela Road Safety Campaign, which kicked off at the end of last month.

SANTACO officials are also checking if vehicles are roadworthy for long-distance travel ahead of the festive season.
The council’s spokesperson Rebecca Phala says vehicles found to be unroadworthy will be subject to penalties.
“Hlokomela campaign is something that we do throughout the year. So we have been checking all the vehicles in terms of their roadworthiness. We have been making sure that our drivers have the valid documentation. We are certain that the taxi industry is ready. In terms of our vehicles, we have always been ready.”
