The 2025 South African Reconciliation Barometer shows that public attitudes remain largely unchanged towards the government of national unity (GNU).
The survey measures public opinion and attitudes in post-apartheid South Africa. This year’s survey indicates confidence in political leaders and institutions remains low.
Poverty, inequality, and exclusion are still major concerns. Few black South Africans believe economic conditions have improved, and the gap between rich and poor is seen as the biggest barrier to reconciliation.
While confidence in public institutions remains low, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) came out top as the most trusted public institution, again. The latest survey shows the SABC is leading at 54%.
The South African Revenue Service (Sars) follows at 46%, while confidence in the Constitutional Court and South African Police Service is much lower at 35 and 34%, respectively.
Only 33% of citizens trust the legal system or the President, while local government and the deputy president rank at the bottom with 26 and 25% respectively.
