Witness D’s car
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola says they are making progress on the assassination of Marius Van Der Merwe or Witness D as he was known in the Madlanga Commission.
He says three persons of interest have been identified and one has already been questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
Van der Merwe was shot and killed in front of his family in the driveway of their home in Brenthurst, Brakpan, east of Johannesburg, on Friday evening.
He had testified that EMPD Deputy Police Chief Julius Mkhwanazi requested that the body of an alleged shop owner be removed and dumped away from a crime scene in Brakpan and was allegedly called in to assist in cleaning up the scene.
Masemola says investigations are on the right track.
“We are confident that we will register a breakthrough as police remain on high alert for those behind the killing of Van Der Merwe. It is safe to say investigations are on the right track. The National Joints together with the Madlanga Commission security have met over the last two/three days to develop a plan to enhance security around officials and witnesses linked to the commission.”
