The South African Weather Service has issued a level 10 red alert, the highest warning for severe thunderstorms expected from midday today.
Residents in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga are urged to take immediate precautions, as extremely dangerous storm conditions are on the way.
Forecasters warned that the storms could bring major infrastructure damage, sudden flash flooding, fallen trees, and widespread power outages.
Authorities are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution as roads may become dangerously slippery.
