Judge Ratha Mokgoathleng presides over the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial at the High Court in Pretoria on December 5, 2025.
The High Court in Pretoria has ruled that police officers who were present when defence witness Sifiso Gwabini Zungu disposed of a statement be recalled in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial.
This comes as the state wants to cross-examine Zungu on the statement he is said to have made to the police in June 2020.
The defence has objected to the statement being used to question Zungu, who is said to have hosted a party where all five accused were present on the day Meyiwa was killed in October 2014.
Zungu alleged that police assaulted him before signing the statement.
Judge Ratha Mokgoathleng says the allegations are very serious. “And this section says, even after the councils have closed the case, even after they have argued, the court can still call the witness at any stage… So the cross-examination of Mr Gwabini can continue thereafter because he’s made a set or testified to evidence which the court wants to hear, from persons who are accused of saying or doing things.”
