The Madlanga Commission has heard how the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) is the only one that has been disbanded. This is according to police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who will be back in the hot seat at the Madlanga Commission on Friday morning.
Evidence brought before the Commission suggests that there are a total of 10 police task teams that are in existence.
Mchunu has told Justice Madlanga that the other task teams are within the jurisdiction of the national police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.
Commission Chairperson Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga has questioned Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s decision to disband the PKTT.
Mchunu, who has been placed on special leave, is facing cross-examination from commissioners and evidence leader Mahlape Sello at the inquiry in Pretoria.
He has been criticised for his decision to disband the PKTT with immediate effect, a move that many witnesses at the commission say was outside his powers.
Madlanga has also questioned why Mchunu did not consult with National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.
Madlanga: The PKTT is being praised at meetings of the inter-ministerial meetings. Correct?
Mchunu: That is correct?
Madlanga: Now you are suggesting that because something had happened or being said in the work study, therefore senior management of the South African Police Service (SAPS) must have expected that you could just drop what I will continue to call a bomb shell.
Madlanga: Is there any other task team that you have disbanded?
Mchunu: There is a unit, not a task team, that we disbanded. The police inspectorate.
Madlanga: I am talking about a task team minister.
Mchunu: There is no other task team that we disbanded because the only one that we talked about was the NPKTT because the other ones were established by the national commissioner and they fell within his purview.
