Eastern Cape Social Development MEC, Bukiwe Fanta has called on communities to unite in the fight against Gender-based violence (GBV) and other crimes.
Fanta visited the distraught family of a 12-year-old girl who was allegedly raped last week at Bende village in Dutywa.
It’s alleged the victim and her grandmother were sleeping at night when an unknown man wearing a balaclava gained entry through the window and raped the girl at knife point.
Fanta has also expressed relief that a suspect has been apprehended.
“We call upon to the society, especially the males to protect the children and women. We don’t know what went wrong with them now that they turn to a 12-year-old. We are worried and we are comfortable that it has been declared a disaster the issue of Gender-based violence (GBV) because we know when it is a disaster, disaster must be treated as such.”
