Rescue teams use tracking dogs to search for bodies after heavy rains caused flooding in KZN.
Search and recovery teams have discovered two bodies believed to be those of residents who went missing during the floods at New Hanover in Umshwathi Local Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands last week.
Three people were reported missing when a river swept away an informal settlement.
The body of the first victim, a woman, was discovered the day after the incident.
“The discovery of these bodies follows concerted effort by communities working together with search and rescue teams following the tragic incident that occurred on Sunday 23 November where severe thunderstorms brought about heavy rain which caused flooding in the New Hanover area which swept away three people. One person was subsequently discovered and recovered the following day with two people becoming missing. This discovery puts to an end a painful chapter within the community as now the processes of identification can commence for the two victims that were discovered this morning,” says spokesperson for KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Senzelwe Mzila.
