File: The late Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain, Senzo Meyiwa
The High Court in Pretoria is expected to hear arguments on the admissibility of a statement by Sifiso Gwabini Zungu when the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial resumes on Tuesday morning.
Zungu is the third witness to be called by the defence to testify in the trial of five men accused of the murder of the Bafana Bafana soccer captain.
Meyiwa was shot and killed at his then-girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo’s, parental home in Vosloorus on Gauteng’s East Rand in 2014.
It’s alleged that Zungu hosted a gathering at a hostel in Vosloorus, where all the accused were allegedly present.
Zungu claims he was assaulted and later made to sign a statement by the police, which he says he didn’t read.
When the state wanted to question him last Thursday on the contents of that statement, the defence objected.
Not only is it alleged that Zungu hosted the party at his hostel residence, state key witness Constable Sizwe Zungu also testified he witnessed the accused hurrying back into the Basotho hostel on the evening of Meyiwa’s murder and witnessed a firearm being handed to Sifiso Gwabini Zungu.
State prosecutor George Baloyi felt it was necessary to question Zungu about the contents of the signed document.
Arguments on the admissibility of Zungu’s statement are expected to be heard on Tuesday morning.
