Body of one missing KZN resident recovered after floods

The KwaZulu-Natal Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department has confirmed that search and rescue teams have recovered the body of one of the three missing people in New Hanover.

They were swept away on Sunday night following heavy rains in the area in the Umshwathi Municipality in the province’s midlands.

The victim, a woman, disappeared when a strong river current washed her away. The heavy downpour has left scores homeless and severely damaged public infrastructure.

“On the ground right now, our search and rescue teams recovering a body of a middle aged female. We also have two more people that are still missing. Our teams are working around the clock. We have a number of partners that we are working with to ensure that we do our best to recover those who are still missing. A number of houses have been damaged as this incident occurred in an area where the houses built along what looks like it was a river many many years ago. So, we are going to be working closely with the community and local leadership to ensure that we prevent such things from ever happening,” says department’s spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila.
