City Power warns against harassment, intimidation of its technicians

Johannesburg City Power has warned against the intimidation and harassment of its technicians. This after a video went viral of a group of people in Turfontein, Johannesburg alleging that technicians were soliciting bribes from them.

The power utility says the allegations are unfounded as the team was in the area to disconnect illegal meter bypasses and conduct meter readings.

City Power Spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the incident was aimed at interfering with their work and instigating violence.

“Records confirm that there are several customers in that street that had bypassed their meters and not buying electricity, and that’s why we view this conduct as an attempt to interfere with our work and also instigate violence against the technicians. City Power acknowledges that there has been instances where unscrupulous employees or contractors have been accused or at least abused their positions to solicit bribes from our customers. We have consistently taken strong actions against such individuals,” says Mangena.
