G20 Summit protests restricted to designated areas near Nasrec: SAPS

The South African Police Service says protests at the G20 leaders’ summit this weekend at the Nasrec Expo Centre, south of Johannesburg, will only be allowed in designated areas around the venue.

This was announced during a media briefing by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) on the security clusters’ state of readiness to secure the summit.

Several civil society groups are planning to hold demonstrations during the summit.

Deputy National Commissioner for Policing, Tebello Mosikidi, says those who fail to comply and attempt to cause disruptions during the summit will face the full might of the law.

“Designated speakers’ corners around the vicinity of Nasrec have been identified for this purpose. We will therefore not allow any disruptions, lawlessness and no damaging and defacing of G20 infrastructure, including posters. Ladies and gentlemen, all law enforcement agencies deployed to secure the event will enforce the law at all times and at all areas of deployment, including routes used by delegates, accommodation, and at this venue.”

Motorists travelling around the vicinity of the Nasrec Expo Centre are advised to expect major traffic delays this weekend, due to road closures as a result of the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

Major routes, including the N3, N1 and N12, will be partially closed during specific times throughout the duration of the summit.

Deputy National Commissioner for Policing, Tebello Mosikidi says, “The specific routes that are already affected include parts of the N1, N12, R21, N3, R24 and the M1. Important to note: when convoys are moving, roads will be closed off completely and movement from road users, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists will be limited. Roads will be opened as soon as the convoys move past the affected routes.”
