National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi.
The judicial watchdog, Judges Matter, says National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi’s evidence before the Nkabinde Inquiry in Pretoria on Tuesday is crucial.
Batohi will be the first witness to testify before the Inquiry, which is looking into Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions Andrew Chauke’s fitness to hold office.
Ramaphosa suspended Chauke in July for alleged misconduct and political interference in high-profile cases. These include failure to pursue charges against former police crime intelligence boss Richard Mdluli.
Chauke, who is accused of receiving bribes, appears in recordings linked to the embattled Bosasa company.
The judicial watchdog’s Mbekezeli Benjamin says, “The National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Batohi, will give crucial evidence on the allegations against Advocate Chauke. As the National Director, all the directors of public prosecutions across all provinces report directly to her, so she would have had insight into these allegations, especially those relating to General Johan Boysen and those relating to General Richard Mdluli. She’s also the one who initiated the suspension of Advocate Chauke, so she is a crucial witness in this entire inquiry.”
Retired Justice Bess Nkabinde is leading the probe.
