CoGTA urges cautuion, SA to heed ‘Orange level 5’ weather warning

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) has urged South Africans to take the severe weather warnings released by the South African Weather Services (SAWS) seriously. The Service yesterday issued an Orange level five warning for heavy downpours today, which could lead to localised flooding in some parts of Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

The Department’s spokesperson Pearl Maseko-Binqose, is calling on the public to stay informed as heavy rains continue in many parts of the country.

“The National Disaster Management Centre has activated disaster teams across the three provinces. Minister Hlabisa is calling on the public to stay informed, follow official instructions, and avoid crossing flooded roads or low bridges. If you are in a flat, prone area, be prepared to move to higher ground. He also encourages communities to look out for the elderly, children, vulnerable loved ones, and neighbours. Protecting life is the first priority,” says Maseko-Binqose.
