KZN Human Settlements responds to reports of wind damage

Teams from the Department of Transport and Human Settlements in KwaZulu-Natal have responded to reports of wind damage in the Pietermaritzburg area.

Heavy winds overnight caused widespread damage, with some residents reporting fallen trees and power outages. The inclement weather conditions come after a warning from the South African Weather Services. The department’s spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says disaster teams are assessing the extent of the damage.

“We are working with the Umsunduzi Traffic Department. Our team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate is working with various Traffic departments to clear various road networks as we have received a report of fallen trees. We have also received reports of various houses being damaged. We are in contact with our roving team from human settlements. The team is working with other members of disaster teams to assist with the damage that has been caused.”

Meanwhile, the Northern Cape Roads and Public Works and Department is urging all motorists across the province to exercise extreme caution on the roads.

This comes as severe weather conditions are expected to affect large parts of the country from today until Monday. The South African Weather Service has reported an intense cut-off low-pressure system.

It is expected to bring heavy rainfall, flooding, severe thunderstorms, damaging winds and a significant drop in temperatures. The department’s spokesperson, Zandisile Luphahla.

“These conditions will make driving extremely dangerous, hence the MEC for Roads and Public Works in the Northern Cape, Fufe Makatong is urging all road users to be extra cautious, please avoid driving at night, reduce speed and obey all road signs and warnings. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or low-lying bridges, and allow more time for travel. The department is also asking the public to help us monitor road conditions.”
