Stop rape sign
The Western Cape Education Department says support is being given to a seven-year-old learner who was allegedly raped at a primary school in Atlantis on the West Coast.
Protests have taken place at the school with people demanding video footage that can identify the rapist.
Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond says, “The allegations were brought to the attention of the school yesterday. The school then informed the district, and the learner is currently receiving support from the district, the Department of Social Development and a local NGO. The allegations have been reported to SAPS, who are currently investigating the circumstances around the incident. SAPS is present at the school to monitor the situation and to conduct an investigation”
It’s not clear at this stage if the alleged perpetrator was an adult or a fellow learner.
Police are investigating the incident.
Community Leader, Noluvuyo Mpongwana says, “We need the evidence what’s happening with the child so what’s happening the mother doesn’t stay with the child. She stays in Khayelitsha then the mother was here yesterday and then they took the child to hospital and to the police station and they opened the case.”
