UJ students protest outside the SABC.
University of Johannesburg (UJ) students were protesting outside the SABC on Friday, seeking media coverage for their concerns about the recent surge in rape cases on campuses and the lack of effective response or support.
On Thursday, a student was allegedly at Kingsway Place residence. One of the protestors says there are several cases that have not been dealt with and they want to be heard and the only way to do so is through the media.
UJ EFF Youth Commander Tanele Mona says, “We are here at SABC to get media coverage on what has been going on in our institutions with gender-based violence. Not only at UJ, but many more institutions out there even the residences that we are staying in. They are not taking us seriously to some extent. We need to demonstrate because we are tired. It starts from a simple comment from the Malume’s we are given by UJ to protect us and the next thing is them forcing themselves on us.”
She adds, “I left home to come and study but I come here to be abused, to be raped. I can’t voice out any concerns because at some point you get threats. I can’t even walk on the streets, I can’t move to the library to study at night because someone will do something to me.”

The students protested around Auckland Park but blocked the SABC entrances and the parking lot for media attention.
UJ students, who preferred to be anonymous, had this to say.
“We recently found out that at a res called Kingsway Place, right here, someone was raped, three perpetrators and seven cases that have not been dealt with. The University is basically not hearing us.”
“We are protesting because we are fighting for the rights of us as women. We are being violated and we are not free or safe. Even inside the institution or the residence we are not safe. So, we want us to be heard.”
“Gender-based violence is at its peak at the moment. Yesterday, we found three cases at the Kingsway residence. The res manager who is a female has been protecting the persecutor. We want people to notice, we want to be seen. I could be next?”
“We having a peaceful protest just to make an alert to the public saying GBV must end by all means. Hence we are trying to have media coverage to alert South Africans at large. I have a sibling who experienced GBV and I am here standing up for them.”
“What we are expecting to get is media coverage as four rape cases are on-going. We want justice for those girls because the management is hiding those rapist.”
