Severe thunderstorms expected to hit various provinces in SA


The North West Cooperative Governance department says disaster management teams are on high alert to respond to any eventuality following heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.  

The department urges residents across the province to exercise extreme caution after the South African Weather Service placed the province under a Yellow Level 4 warning for thunderstorms with possibility heavy downpours, damaging winds, lightning, and hail, which may lead to localised flooding and disruptions.  

Department’s spokesperson  Thebeetsile Keameditse says that some areas of the province may experience isolated but impactful storms, with potential damage to infrastructure. 

Caution

Motorists and residents are advised not to cross flooded roads, rivers and low-lying bridges.

Residents living in low lying areas are urged to be extra vigilant for possibility of flooding. The province is expected to receive above normal rainfall throughout the summer season 

The Gauteng CoGTA has also warned the residents within the province to stay safe after The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for possible severe thunderstorms across parts of southern, western, and central Gauteng.  

City of Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi urges motorists to exercise caution while driving extend safe following distance avoid crossing flooded roads/low lying bridges.

KwaZulu-Natal province is also expecting level 4 severe thunderstorms over the western part of the province.

KZN COGTA spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila has urged residents to stay vigilant as the inclement weather poses danger.

According to South African Weather Services, Mpumalanga and Limpopo should also expect level 2 severe thunderstorms on the 11th of November 2025.
