Students protest at Wits after SRC member accused of sexual assault

Wits University students in Johannesburg held a protest on Monday night against gender-based harm.

The protest follows allegations that a newly elected member of the Student Representative Council (SRC) raped a fellow student.

The university says the incident has been reported to its Gender Equity Office, which is investigating the matter in line with university policies.

Wits University Spokesperson Shirona Patel says the university urges that all matters related to gender-based harm should be reported to the Gender Equity Office as soon as possible.

Patel says, “The Gender Equity Office will manage this in line with the university’s rules and policies. The university urges all students and others to report any form of gender based harm to the office in person or online. The student then marched to Braamfontein last night and dispersed peacefully thereafter.”Reporting by Culvin Mabasa.
