Outside the KwaZulu-Natal High Court.
Some alleged instigators who were members of the social media groups which incited public violence during the 2021 July civil unrest had international links to countries like Cuba.
This was the testimony of the state’s first witness, Hawks Major-General Gopaul Govender, who is the National Co-ordinator for Unrest Investigations.
Govender has been testifying in the trial of uMkhonto weSizwe Party Member of Parliament, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, at the High Court in Durban.
The state says Zuma-Sambudla’s social media posts intentionally and unlawfully encouraged the public to engage in acts of violence under ‘hashtag Free Jacob Zuma’.
The court heard earlier that there were more than 160 WhatsApp groups created which were used to communicate messages to incite the looting and destruction.
