Cachalia promises to tackle gang violence in Westbury and Reiger Park

Acting Minister of Police, Firoz Cachalia, says a plan has been put in place to tackle gang violence in Westbury and Reiger Park, including an increased deployment of officers on the ground.

Cachalia was speaking following a meeting in Westbury attended by top police brass, including National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola and his counterpart Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni.

Cachalia says the anti-gang unit will also be beefed up in high-risk areas.

“The police are deploying increased resources, and the national commissioner just announced further steps to strengthen the anti-gang unit, which was established to deal with this problem of gang violence but that is not sufficient. I think the area of crime intelligence, strengthening of our detective services so that we have increasing reliance in what we call intelligence-driven policing has to be a critical part of the strategy,” explains Cachalia.
