Westbury fumes over police meeting snub

The community of Westbury in Johannesburg has expressed frustration and anger after not being invited to a ministerial stakeholder engagement this morning.

The meeting is being attended by top police brass, including National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola and his Gauteng counterpart Tommy Mthombeni.

The engagement which will also be held in Reiger Park in Ekurhuleni this afternoon, comes after both communities recently witnessed mass killings which have been attributed to gang violence.

Westbury community leaders who were barred from attending the stakeholder engagement this morning at the Joburg Metro Police headquarters, say it’s unacceptable to hold such an important meeting without hearing their concerns from the ground.

It’s understood that only a few members of the community were invited to attend.

Some community leaders say that they’ve again witnessed the same pattern of exclusion and staged engagements.

The media who were initially invited to the meeting, were also asked to leave at the last minute.
