Ad Hoc Committee investigating options for Matlala testify

Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee is investigating options to get testimony from remanded detainee, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

The committee was established after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the justice system.

Matlala, who is facing charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering, is being held in the Kgosi Mampuru C-Max prison.

The committee met Monday to discuss a draft report that will be presented to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza, regarding a request for a second extension.

Ad Hoc Committee’s Chair, Molapi Lekganyane, says, “The senior council is making arrangements with the legal team to have a virtual consultation with Mr Matlala and the security team of parliament went to Pretoria to make an assessment whether the committee can go and conduct its hearings there or whether the committee would want to do virtual hearings.”

Lekganyane says Matlala has been keen to appear before the committee.

“The person who was very quick to respond to say I want to come was Mr. Matlala, but he was also asking questions about where he is sleeping in Cape Town. He doesn’t want to be transported by the police and so on and so forth.”
