Cachalia to meet Westbury, Reiger Park communities over gang violence

Acting Police Minister Prof Firoz Cachalia will today lead ministerial stakeholder engagements in the gang-ridden communities of Westbury, Johannesburg and Reiger Park in Ekurhuleni.

This comes after both communities witnessed tragic incidents of gun violence and mass killings in recent weeks, which have been attributed to gang violence.

The mass shootings left a total of eight people dead.

The stakeholder engagement will also be attended by the National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola and Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni in an attempt to try and find a solution to end the on-going violence.

Last month, two teenagers where shot dead while five others were left wounded in Westbury after being ambushed by a group of alleged rival gang members.

Five suspects have since been arrested.

Just a week later, six people were killed and three others wounded in a drive-by shooting in Reiger Park.

In that incident, one suspect was arrested but later released due to lack of evidence while a second person was taken in for questioning.
