South African Communist Party (SACP) General Secretary Solly Mapaila has called for policy reform in the energy sector to ensure that Eskom has capacity to provide electricity for all.
Mapaila was speaking outside the regional offices of Eskom in Bellville during a march to call for labour centres in rural areas.
Mapaila has also lambasted those who are against the use of coal to generate electricity.
“We need the problems facing Eskom to be sorted out policy wise because we know one of the Eskom stations in Mpumalanga, for instance that has revamped and available to live for the next 30 years or so being destroyed because we are following the instructions of Europe. Europe doesn’t want the roll of coal in our energy system. We have more coal that can last us for 300 years. Why should we give it away because of Europe,” adds Mapaila.
