Scharnick denies being Sibiya’s close protector

Stuart James Scharnick says Crime Intelligence Head General Dumisani Khumalo is seeking to mislead the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry by calling him a close protector of suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner General Shadrack Sibiya.

This is after his name and criminal record featured prominently at the Commission on Tuesday, with video footage showing Sibiya driving his car.

Scharnick explained why he was at Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee last month when Sibiya appeared to give testimony, which is also investigating criminality in the country’s criminal justice system.

“He probably did that just to misconstrue, and convolute the air and mislead the Madlanga Commission, to try and paint the narrative that they’ve been running, of this syndicate. He knows my proximity to Shadrack Sibiya; he knows I’m not his close protector. When we were at the Ad hoc Committee, I was merely sitting there to assist the evidence team, because there’s a substantial amount of information, particularly pertaining to the investigations of the PKTT from KZN, which I’ve given to the Deputy National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya.”

Scharnick has also accused Khumalo of running a smear campaign against him at the Commission.  He says he just wants to clear his name.

“The fact that I’ve had cases in 2011 and 2010 that’s more than a decade and a half ago, which were then concluded by the justice system, and I was given a suspended sentence and a fine, meaning I’ve served my time, which wasn’t even a prison sentence. It was really money that needed to be paid as a fine, as well as a suspended sentence, which was concluded and left already, meaning I’m free.”
