An explosives expert has been arrested for alleged trespassing at Nasrec in Johannesburg.
The man, who is also an operations director at Gauntlet Security Solutions, was arrested on Monday night.
He allegedly attempted to access the venue without authorisation.
Officials have described the incident as a publicity stunt in which the man questioned the state’s readiness to host the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit.
Government Communication and Information System Spokesperson William Baloyi says the incident shows that South Africa’s security systems are fully prepared for the international gathering.
“This stunt at Nasrec was an attempt at proving his falsehood that South Africa’s security apparatus was not ready to secure the forthcoming G20 leaders’ summit.”
Baloyi adds that the arrest is “a clear demonstration that the law enforcement agencies are more than ready to ensure the security of all delegates to the G20 leaders’ summit”.
“Since taking over the G20 presidency, South Africa has already hosted more than 130 G20 preparatory meetings.”
