Jerome Booysen case adjourned over witness’ video link issues

Court proceedings have adjourned for the day in the case against alleged underworld boss, Jerome Booysen and 11 others in the Western Cape High Court.

The presiding judge raised concerns about the witness having to testify via a video link. This is part of the trial within a trial on whether alleged phone conversation recordings are admissible as evidence in the matter.

Booysen and others face several charges, including the murder of the steroid smuggler, Brian Wainstein, in 2017.

Judge Vincent Saldanha has told the court that the witness’ testimony via a video link is not convenient and conducive.

This after there were technical difficulties in hearing the evidence of the witness due to poor sound quality coming from the laptop.

The court heard that an order had been made in the previous court proceedings that prevented the witness to testify in an open court as he suffered a mental breakdown last year.

The state told the court that psychologists had recommended that the witness testify via a video link to avoid having to face the accused as that would trigger his medical condition.

The matter has been postponed until Tuesday.
