Law enforcement slammed for failing to root out taxi warfare

The National Taxi Alliance has criticised law enforcement agencies for allegedly failing to root out the long, ongoing taxi warfare between industry associations.

Taxi bosses in Gauteng are living in fear after a surge in murders, including the killing of the Alexandra Randburg Midrand Sandton Taxi Association (ARMSTA) chairperson Victor Moekeletsi and his bodyguard yesterday.

This follows the murder of Gauteng NTA chairperson Thami Moyo last month despite several rival taxi associations across the country having signed peace agreements.

Gauteng NTA spokesperson, Theo Malele says, “I don’t think that the police are doing enough. If that was the case, I mean, we will also hear, even in the Madlanga Commission, how some of the police were involved in concealing the murders of other taxi operators. And how do you then live in such a country where your life is not even been guaranteed? What does it mean? Must we now have unmarked clothing as we walk about at night? I really don’t know what is this that needs to happen.”
