EMPD Deputy Chief faces suspension over links to ‘Cat’ Matlala

It could be the end of the road for Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief, Julius Mkhwanazi.

Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has confirmed receiving the internal report into allegations of misconduct levelled against the Deputy Chief. However, he refused to detail the matter further.

Mkhwanazi may be placed under precautionary suspension.

Council members tabled an urgent motion against Mkhwanazi for his alleged involvement with controversial businessman, and attempted murder accused Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

Mkhwanazi allegedly used his powers to supply Matlala’s private vehicles with EMPD blue lights.

Xhakaza says they will be going through the report.

“The report is now being processed in council. We have received it. As I have indicated this is an in committee meeting. We might not necessarily be able to pronounce but the administrations are now seized. I’m certain that in the next day or two we should be able to issue.”

Xhakaza says they want to ensure that all necessary steps are followed before releasing a report, and taking action against Mkhwanazi.

“The disciplinary proceeding as guided by the [South African] Local Government Bargaining Council disciplinary procedure. Will have to take effect without fear or favour. We remain committed to the principles of transparency. Restoring trust to our communities and restoring, reinforcing the values of good governance. That underpin our renewal agenda.”
